So after having my same Iphone 4 for four years I'm finally upgrading to a diffrent phone! I have a budget of $200 on contract and I've narrowed it down to two phones, the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC one M8.
I love the way the HTC one looks! It's absolutely beautiful! However while the S5 isn't as good looking, it packs a better screen, about an hour more battery, is waterproof, and has a much better camera! But the HTC one, while less, still carries a 15 hour charge with normal use. It is extremely durable so I could use it without a case (My iphone 4 has been living au natural since I bought it and it's still almost spotless). So anyone want to convince me one way or another?

I'd get the HTC just to be different, and it looks way better like you said.
But the waterproofness of the S5 is tempting.

HTC build quality is just amazing, and Samsung uses a lot of plastics that crack if dropped (ask me how I know!). I prefer Samsungs screens though, but if I had to use a case to have it, I'd just go with the HTC instead.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S
I did not forget to put a number at the end. Samsungs are amazing.

I recently got the M8 choosing between it and the Nexus 5. I've been impressed with it so far. The boom sound speakers sound like a gimmick but I've been surprised how many times I've used them to listen to some music, or an audiobook or something.
The back is very durable but it will scratch but it is a very solid phone and feels good in your hand. Battery has been fine so far for me, the camera isn't the best but it is very very fast which is nice.
I've been happy with it so far. The GS3 was a great phone but now the Galaxy phones just feel plasticy and cheap

Neither.
If going Android then go Nexus.

I have the M8 and love it. The front facing stereo speakers are amazing. The camera is excellent in low light and the duocamera editing features are fun.
Full disclosure, my last 4 phones have been HTC.

I vote HTC. I can't stand the Touchwiz or the cheap Samsung build quality. Both phones will have great screens and relatively good cameras and both have similar battery life. Honestly, the only real advantage I see with the Samsung is the MicroSD slot, which most people really don't even need.

my understanding is that the HTC camera is no slouch. That would be my pick if I was going on - contract. But I suspect my next phone will be a nexus or Motorola - no more contracts for me.

I have an HTC with Boom Sound and can attest it is just a gimmick. A frustrating but useful gimmick.
It sounds to me like it is just an amp that is turned on, and it sounds like crap. Without it though the phone puts out no volume through the AUX, bluetooth or speakers. So the choices come down to 1) High fidelity but too quiet or 2) Loud enough and too muddy/ bassy.
Not bad for a phones sound, but I would prefer something with either an eequalizer or at least something more honest.

Each of the last few generations I've compared the Galaxy and its HTC competitor, and the HTC is much more solid, plus fit the same screen into a smaller footprint (less bezel). Can't speak to the Samsung software since I've only used it briefly, but HTC's Sense does fine (I'd just as soon have bare Android though). Go use them side by side in the store...for three straight rounds the HTC has won hands down.

Okay! Here's a big point!
The HTC is a great phone. However, HTC doesn't like to be updated as fast with new Android software.
Samsung is Android's other baby (the main is Motorola). Samsung will get all the updates, love, and support!
However, I'd take neither. Id get one of the most underrated ones out there!
The LG G2
Blazing fast, beautiful screen, 32GB memory, monster battery (honestly its the best out of EVERY other smartphone! Look it up!)
And a lot of places are doing deals where they are FREE with a 2 year agreement! So, I'd really give it a look!

I've got an m8 and 3g functionality died in less than a month. Works perfectly in LTE land and on WiFi. Currently getting dicked around by HTC. Everything else is great, but no 3g (including voice) kind of defeats the purpose of a phone.

Then Windows Phone?
I carry a Galaxy 4 and a HTC 8XT running WP7. Despite the technical superiority of the SG4 the 8XT camera is much, much better. The camera app opens faster, focuses faster and takes more accurately focused images. If camera is a primary concern I would go Windows Phone, hands down.
But I have my Nikon DSLR for real picture taking, so the camera is a secondary concern at best.

My experience:
Software - Samsung wins. It isn't so much a landslide, but it is an easy win.
Hardware - HTC has no rivals for feel and solidity.

I'm far from an expert on the subject (I still have the same Blackberry 8900 from five years ago), but..
The HTC One is sealed up like an iPhone, so you can't easily change/remove the battery, and it can't take a micro SD card Yay! The One M8 can.
OTOH, it does look pretty sleek and higher-quality materials than the S5.
Just to make things more interesting/confusing, have you considered the Sony Xperia Z2? Larger-capacity battery, faster processor & more RAM than either the M8 or S5, also waterproof, and a 20.7 MP sensor. If I were to get a new phone today, I'd be split between the Z2 & S5.

That's what I would do. If I needed a super high amount of MP I would get the Windows phone no doubt.

I have an M7, a very good phone, camera is horrible in the dark, and gives everything a purple tint. The M8 is a bit better as a phone. I have a case on my phone, and i can barely tell it's there. I've used my old phone, an HTC Legend, without a case, and it held up well.

Hmm...
I am talking HTC's Window phone. It has the standard-ish MP cameras. 8MP that is, so a little small, but an F2 lens!
Now if you want stupid high resolution cameras, then Nokia is the boat. The thing is, that just doesn't actually make any sense to me. There is a physical limit to where more sensors make sense on a small sensor camera.

I've got an HTC One Max. Choose that over other options because the battery life is incredible, I can use it non-stop literally all day and still have 20% remaining at 11pm. Also hated how cheap the Samsung offerings felt. This thing tough and gorgeous.

I don't know about the S5, but I have an S4 which is buggy as hell, cheaply made, and generally does the opposite of what I want it to do. Personally, I'd go with the HTC.

I have the m8. I had the original one. The metal build is amazing. Once you have it you can't go back. Samsung just feels super cheap compared to it. Battery life is very good. And I haven't had any problems. Absolutely love the phone.

Go with the S5. I like my S4 very much, the camera sucks though, they're always blurred if you move centimeters, thing that didnt happen to me with my old iphone 4.

Traded my GS3 for an HTC M8 like a month ago. I haven't looked back. THe battery is freakishly good and the build quality is stellar. There isn't anything I haven't liked yet, plus a 6 month warranty on the screen is pretty nice.

The s5 is very gimmicky. The specs are great but its all watered down with touchwiz (the samsung skin on android) Thats just a personal opinion but the HTC One is much lighter weight as far as the OS and for the camera, Yes its not as good but it is very good for how much people seem to rag on it. 90% of the time you wont notice that its any different unless you make the picture really large.

I don't really have anything against the Iphone. However I like that the samsung and the HTC have 5" screens along with expandable storage up to 124 gb. I really want to be able to watch videos on it.

If possible, hold off for a few months? Come september, iPhone 6 will be released with 4.7" screen (rumors) as well as a 5.5" screen, so there's that.
